Institute of Materials Science

Institute of Materials Science of CUMT grew out of metallographic laboratory founded in 1980. Currently, there is a faculty of 24, including 5 professors and 22 associate professors. Holders of doctoral degree account for 91%. We have National Characteristic Discipline Development Center for Materials Science and Engineering (orientation of energy materials) and students innovation base of energy materials and mineral materials. The cultivation environment is improved gradually. There are about 400 students in our School. Tutorial system is applied to undergraduate students in which they are guided by specified teachers in study and ideology and morality. Teachers are required to perform their responsibility strictly. We undertake several national and provincial research tasks. The annual publication of high-level papers is ranked among the best in CUMT. We also advocate international exchange with others and now there are nine teachers having finished training or studying at abroad. All members work hard to create an open, tolerant, active and positive cultivation and research environment.

Institute of Materials Engineering

Institute of Materials Engineering of CUMT is founded in 2003 and is a comprehensive research institute with talent cultivation, scientific research and social service. The goal is to develop scientific research and discipline construction of School of Materials Science and Engineering. We regard teaching as our basis, improvement of scientific research as our centre and servicing the society as our responsibility. We develop school-enterprise cooperation and co-building of production, teaching and research actively and undertake the teaching and guidance of undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, we provide education and training platform for talents cultivation, social practice and eyesight of employment entrepreneurship of Material Formingand Control Engineering.

At present, we have 24 full-time teachers including 3 professors and 10 associate professors. 91.6% of them have a doctor degree. Our researches are mainly focused on forming theory and technology of modern advanced materials, design and manufacture of new energy materials, design and molding of advanced materials, molding of high performance basic components, computer modeling and simulation of material molding, design and molding of advanced mould and surface engineering of materials on the basis of Material Formingand Control Engineering Laboratory, co-building of production, teaching and research laboratory and off-campus innovation base.

Institute of Reliability

Institute of Tribology and Reliability of CUMT has a faculty of 13, including 6 professors (also the doctoral supervisors), 5 associate professors and 2 lecturers. They all have a doctor degree and 7 of them have been abroad for further study. Besides, there are 2 postdoctoral researchers, 13 doctors and 57 graduates. There are 200 sets of experimental facilities, costing 16 million yuan. The total area of laboratory is about 800m2.

Our research directions are tribology nonlinear theory, design of mine wear-resistant material, biological materials and tribology, micro electro mechanical system tribology, composite tribology and rescue robot. We have undertook over 50 research projects, namely major program of the eleventh five-year plan of National Science and Technology Supporting Plan, major program of Natural Science Foundation of China, major international cooperation program of Natural Science Foundation of China, research on important basic problems of 973, National High TechnologyResearch and Development Programof China of 863, Natural Science Foundation of China, National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, Reward Fund for Outstanding Young Teachers in colleges and universities in China, Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, Scientific Research Project Fund of Ministry of Coal Industry, University Doctoral Station Research Fund of Ministry of Education, Returnees Foundation and many Special Foundation.

We have published 11 monographs and 500 papers among which over 80 are included into SCI and 200 into EI. We have also obtained 40 patents and many awards, such as Second Prize of National Invention, Second Prize of National Award for Science and Technology Progress, Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Ministry of Education, First Prize of Scienceand Technology Progress of Jiangsu Province and Third Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Ministry of Coal Industry

Materials Science Laboratory

Materials Science Laboratory belongs to Institute of Materials Science, mainly working on experimental teaching of materials science and engineering and cultivation task of graduates. The lab with an area of 1200 m2 has been built as an improved teaching and research platform in materials science. The total cost of experimental equipment is over 6 million yuan. There are basic teaching laboratory, solar cell laboratory, mineral materials laboratory and new materials laboratory. Besides, there are more than a dozen of large-scale equipment costing 100 thousand yuan, namely infrared spectrometer, simultaneous thermal analyzer, ultraviolet and visible spectro photometer, fluorospectro photometer, thermal expansion coefficient apparatus, thermal conductivity measuring apparatus and vacuum hot pressure sintering furnace.

There is a teaching and management team with advanced educational idea, strong research ability and extensive experience and there are 10 full-time or part-time teachers. Professional basic experimental courses related to materials are open to all students in the School. The annual experimenter is over 10 thousand. We also undertake graduation project of undergraduates, scientific research training and cultivation of graduates.



Materials Molding Laboratory

Materials Molding Laboratory belongs to Institute of Material Formingand Control Engineering, with a faculty of 24 including 3 doctorial supervisors and 17 master tutors. The lab covers an area of 1200m2 and the cost of experimental facilities is 5.1million yuan. There are many researching and teaching platforms, namely metal formation and control, plastic formation and control, materials molding and simulation, design and training of mould, material surface modification and material performance. Experimental facilities are laser welding molding system, high vacuum melting/suction/casting/spray casting molding system, plasma cladding system, plastic blow molding/compression/injection molding equipment, metal die-casting molding equipment, different heating furnaces, materials molding simulation experiment room and material performance experimental equipment.

We mainly undertake undergraduate experimental teaching of Materials Molding and Control Engineering and teaching and scientific research of graduates and scientific research of teachers. Main research directions are metal welding molding machine theory, metal rapid solidification molding and theory, materials molding and simulation, design and manufacture of new energy materials, design and molding of advanced materials, molding of high performance basic components, corrosion and protection of materials, mould design and mould materials. We undertake many research programs, namely Natural Science Foundation of China, Doctorial Station Foundation of China, Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, Science and Technology Program of Jiangsu Province and cooperation projects entrusted by different enterprises.


Reliability Engineering Laboratory

There are 8 researchers in Reliability Engineering Laboratory of CUMT, including 5 professors (3 of them being doctorial supervisors), 3 associate professors. There are over 200 sets of experimental facilities with a total cost of 13million yuan. The laboratory covers an area of 777m2. Our research directions are tribology nonlinear theory, design of mine wear-resistant material, biological materials and tribology, micro electro mechanical system tribology, composite tribology and rescue robot.
