Bridge and Underground Engineering Department

Bridge and Underground Engineering Department originated from the Mine Roadway Engineering Laboratory and Blasting Engineering Laboratory, which were established in 1956. The department concentrates on teaching and research of civil engineering, mine construction, transportation construction, underground engineering and other areas, whose fruitful achievements has won many national, provincial and ministerial awards in researches of deep roadway stability, rock reinforcement, rock blasting, tunnel stability, roads and bridges design theory and reinforcement technology in mining subsidence area and special treatment to weak foundation, etc.

 

The department has 10 teachers, including 5 professors, 1 associate professor and 4 lecturers. They are chiefs or members in many international or national institutions like ISRM, ITA, Test Professional Committee and Soft Rock Professional Committee of National Institute of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, China Underground Engineering and Underground Space Institute, China anchor Society, Singapore tunnel Society, etc.

 

The department is featured and characteristic in teaching and scientific researches, with many research directions advance internationally. It shoulders 12 projects including Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), National 973 Program, and National 211 Program, as well as many horizontal projects, with an annual research fund of over 35 million Yuan RMB.

Mechanics and Engineering Science Department originates from the Mechanics Teaching Laboratory. Department of Architectural Engineering, CUMT is one of the oldest departments in this university. It originates from the major of Industrial and Civil Construction, changed the name into Department of Structural Engineering, and finally became into Department of Architectural Engineering. This department is the main body for doctoral programs of Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Protection Engineering, which is also a key discipline in Jiangsu Province. In this department, the discipline of architectural engineering and the discipline of structural engineering are developing in parallel.

 

There are 25 teachers and 2 researchers in this department, including 5 professors and doctoral tutors, 12 associate professors and 8 lecturers, many of which have obtained overseas education background. The teachers pay much attention in the qualification of professional skills; many of them have obtained the qualifications of National 1st Class Registered Structural Engineer, National 1st Class Registered Construction Engineer and Registered Project Management Engineer, etc.

Department of Architecture Studies was established in 1985, undertakes the task of teaching programs of Architectural Design and Theory, Urban Planning and Design and Architecture and Civil Engineering for post graduates and the architecture program for undergraduates.

 

There are 18 teachers in this department, including 1 professor, 8 associate professors and 9 lecturers. Besides, there are also 8 foreign visiting professors and 8 domestic pat-time professors.

 

In recent years, the department is in a fast development, undertakes many theory and technology researches including architectural design, urban planning and design, regional planning, ancient protection, landscape design, interior design, etc. At present, the department development takes industrial and mining city and underground architecture research as the feature.

 

In the development, the department has always been strengthening international cooperation and utilizing outstanding foreign education resources and advanced conceptions to elevate its education level and the quality of students. It has established cooperative education and academic exchange mechanisms with universities and institutions in America, Germany and Singapore, etc., regularly organizes Architecture and Urban Planning Symposium and invites domestic and foreign scholars to participate in the academic exchanges. The development also has hired foreign experts to give lectures and conduct collaborative research and academic exchanges regularly, which realms covering the major professional directions of architectural disciplines.

Department of Building Environment and Equipment Engineering was established in 2003, originated from the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering Laboratory, which was founded in 1988. The Department offers Doctoral and Master Programs of Heating, Gas Supply, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering, and the major of Building Environment and Equipment Engineering for undergraduates, which includes three sub-majors, namely Artificial Environment and Building Energy Efficiency, Construction Equipment and Intelligent Engineering, and Municipal and Fire Safety.

 

There are 8 teachers in this Department, including 1 professor, 5 associate professors and 2 lecturers. It successively undertakes many projects, like Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Jiangsu Province Natural Science Foundation and many other national, provincial and ministerial projects. Geotechnical Engineering Institute

Geotechnical Engineering Institute was established in 1995, is one of the main units for construction of national key discipline of Geotechnical Engineering. There are 15 teachers in this institute, including 4 professors, 1 researcher, 3 associate professors and 7 lecturers, one of which is a winner of Special Government Allowance of the State Council.

 

In recent years, this institute has undertaken over 20 projects of Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and provincial and ministerial projects, and more than 130 enterprise-commissioned projects, with hundreds of billion Yuan RMB of research fund. It has won 1 national award, over 20 provincial and ministerial awards, published 12 monographs and textbooks, and more than 320 dissertations.

 

The institute takes the Underground Engineering Laboratory as the main research platform, has the international advanced large multi-shaft simulation test bed, 1 KM deep borehole simulation test bed, and geological radar detection equipments, and a batch of modern laboratory and testing equipment and numerical calculation software.


With the advanced research platform, the institute is mainly concentrating on the following fields:

Deep soil mechanics,

Basic theory and experimental techniques of deep frozen soil mechanics,

Deep frozen sinking technology,

Sinking deep drilling technology,

Urban underground construction freezing technology,

Rupture and soft rock reinforcement and support technology,

At present, the earth topsoil depth reached 587.5m, by the means of frozen sinking technology, is the deepest in the world.

Institute of Rock Mechanics and Engineering was established in 2010, is one of the main units for construction of national key discipline of Geotechnical Engineering. There are 13 teachers in this institute, including 6 professors, 5 associate professors and senior engineers and 2 lecturers.

 

The Institute takes Rock and Soil Mechanics Laboratory as the research base. The main research fields are:

Nonlinear problems of high stress rock, rock mechanics,

Roadway deformation mechanism,

Roadway stability control technology under complex conditions,

Hydrous, broken and soft rock reinforcement technology,

Etc..

 

At present, the institute is undertaking many projects, including projects of Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and their subprojects, National 973 Program, National Key Technology R&D Program for the 11th Five-Year Plan, and other horizontal and vertical projects and enterprise-commissioned projects.It is also responsible for the main task of building the key disciplines of geotechnical engineering.


Featured researches are Physical and mechanical properties and geotechnical engineering response of deep rock, and Mechanical properties of deep rock and deep rock damage evolution after fracture. The research of physical and mechanical properties of deep rock and the Deep Roadway Stability Control Technology advance internationally.

 

Institute of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering

Institute of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, was established in 2010, is one of the main units for construction of national key discipline of Geotechnical Engineering. There are 13 teachers in this institute, including 4 professors, 6 associate professors and researchers and 3 lecturers, among them, 1 is a member of The Royal Academy of Engineering and 1 is a winner of Special Government Allowance of the State Council.

 

The Institute takes Rock and Soil Mechanics Laboratory as the research base. The main research fields are physical and mechanical properties of deep soil and artificial permafrost, and the nonlinear mechanics of soil-structure interaction problems. The institute currently undertakes many projects including Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), National 973 Program, National Key Technology R&D Program for the 11th Five-Year Plan, as well as many sub-projects and enterprise-cooperative projects.

 

At present, the research of geotechnical media - macroscopic physical and mechanical properties and engineering response of geotechnical mediaunder special conditions is a future research program, and the research of artificial frozen soil physical and mechanical theory, mechanical properties of soil-structure interaction advances in China.

 

The goal of the institute is to grow into a creative institute for scientific research and talents development in the fields of geotechnical medium physical, mechanical and engineering stable response under special conditions.

Institute of Engineering Management was established in 2003. There are 16 teachers in this institute, including 4 professors, 4 associate professors and 8 lecturers. In recent years, the institute undertakes many national, provincial and ministerial projects, including 18 vertical projects, 17 horizontal projects, with a total research fund of over 20 million Yuan RMB. In recent five years, the institute has organized more than 60 times of academic exchanges and activities.

 

Research directions include Construction project management, mine engineering project management, construction supervision, engineering economics, project cost management, project management information system, etc. The present research fund is close to 10 million Yuan RMBand is gradually becoming a mine-featured influential Project Management Research and Practice Base.

 

The institute won 21 teaching achievements awards, including 3 provincial and ministerial awards, published 13 monographs and textbooks, 40 teaching papers, and almost 300 dissertations, 30 of which are included in EI. Besides, the institute won 10 provincial and ministerial Research Achievements Awards, and accessed to 3 national invention patents.

Institute of Mine Cooling and Heat Energy Use

Institute of Mine Cooling and Heat Energy Use is established in 2010, with 6 teachers in this institute, including 2 professors, 1 associate professor and 3 lecturers. The Institute has over 300 pieces of experimental instruments, with a value of over 3 million Yuan RMB of fixed assets, and the area of the laboratory is over 800 square meters, with sub-labs for researches of building thermal, thermal testing, heating and air conditioning, ventilation and dust removal, refrigeration, building energy.

 

The institute has taken on many projects, including Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), China Doctoral Scientific Fund Project and projects from Education Ministry of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and NDRC ( National Development and Reform Commission ). The research fund is over 1 million Yuan RMB annually.

 

Research in the institute takes coal mining as the base, and stretches to relative heat utilization industries, and is featured with the research of mine cooling and heat energy use.

 

Since its establishment, the institute actively constructed a research system platform for mine cooling and heat utilization research studies, innovatively established the mine cooling simulation test system, mine cooling device performance test systems, thermal mine environmental assessment simulation bench and mine geothermal recycling experiments bench, etc. which are high-leveled basic research platforms.
