The predecessor of Institute of Applied Geophysics is the Research Office of Geophysical Prospecting. The institute began to enroll undergraduates in 1960. After over 50 years of gradual improvement and with the supports of 211 Project and 985 Project superior discipline construction programs, it has established an experimental base at international advanced level, an engineering PhD program of Geo-detection and Information Technology and a science MA program of Geophysics. In 1999, the discipline of Geo-detection and Information Technology was approved to offer posts for Distinguished Professor of Chang Jiang Scholars Program. In 2006, it was rated as Jiangsu Province Key Discipline. In 2011, Geophysics was awarded as Jiangsu Province Brand-name Discipline.
The teaching of Applied Geophysics with Coal Geophysics Survey and Mine Geophysics Survey as its distinctive research directions has cultivated for our country a great number of senior talents in the field of geophysics survey and made huge contributions to resources exploration as well as efficient and safe production of the coal industry. In aspect of scientific research, Institute of Applied Geophysics in recent years has assumed many important research projects, like National 973 Project, national key projects, as well as national scientific and technological support projects and has been awarded three state-level prizes for technological progress and more than 20 provincial-level prizes. At present, the institute has been devoted to the research on theory, method, and technology of geophysics in fields of new resources exploration and development as well as mining safety.
